Y'all I am shocked! I did not know I could even run this much! This all started off as a New Years Resolution to work out more and eat healthier coming into the 2021 year. Here are my milestones:

My first 5k (3 miles) achieved in mid January
My first 8k (5 miles) achieved in late January
My first 10k (6.2 miles) achieved in late February (this past Wednesday 2/24)
My first 13k (8 miles) achieved TODAY 2/27! (avg pace was around 13 minutes/mile). Overall, it took me 8 weeks to be able to run 8 miles! What a great way to end black history month!

As mentioned in the title, how many miles have you ran? What is your longest?

Wow! Congratulations! Did you run it straight through? The longest I ran was around a mile around a track, and it was very slow. Folks probably can walk faster than my run. Lol.

Dang you’re killing the game. Congrats mama... Do you have hilly areas on your running path? You need to run those if possible because that’s how you’re going to be able to hit 10 min miles and lower. I set out to run a quick 5k today but the air felt so fresh that I ended up doing 5 miles at 9:19 mins per mile average. I used to hate running but the more you run the better you get and the lighter you feel.
The longest I ran ever was like 10 miles and that was about 2 years ago. I was training with my husband who runs half marathons and he pushed me a lot. My time was way better too. These days I suck but it is all about consistency

That's commendable. You should be proud of yourself because it takes a lot of discipline to accomplish a feat like that.

I've never been a runner, so my biggest flex, thus far, has been six miles in a little under two hours.

Snail's pace, but better than nothing.

Congratulations to you! Just the other day I was able to do 1 1/2 without stopping. I lost 33 pounds last year and I’ve maintained my weight. Running was NEVER my thing but it helped in my weight loss. I couldn’t even run a mile in high school and now I’m doing it for fun. I’m not fast but I’m learning how to keep a pace. 8 miles straight through is amazing!

That’s amazing!! I recently fell in love with running too and am 10k training now. You must feel so so so accomplished though, 8 miles is such an athletic distance! Did you get a runners high?

I don't think I experienced it on this run unfortunately, but hopefully I feel it or "notice" it soon!

That’s awesome OP!! I hope to get there some day, I took up running almost a year ago when quarantine hit and all the gyms were closed. I typically run 3x a week, from 3-4.5 miles. The longest distance I’ve run is 4.5 miles. My pace is around 10.02 minutes. How many times a week do you run and how far on each run? Like how do you break down each run for the week? @naturallemons

I run 4-5x a week, but I may bring that down to 4x a week so I can incorporate some strength training! On average, I run 15-20 miles a week, and I usually run 3-5 miles. My goal is to be able to run a 15k (~9.3 miles), no more than that! I want to get to a point where I can successfully run a 5k, 10k, and 15k with a good time and maintain it!

That’s really good! I think I will up my run days to 4x a week instead of 3x a week. I really need to push myself on my run days to up my mileage to 5 miles on some of those days. Got any other tips? @naturallemons

I don't know whats the most I've ran, that was way back in my Army days. I'm not really fit to run these days. Before the pandemic I would walk 6 miles a day. My mojo is gone though and I need it back.

50K (31 miles).

Once you can run 20 miles you can run a marathon or ultra marathon. One day I'll do a 50 miler but right now I'm working on getting faster.

Wow, that's very impressive, @naturallemons! It's so much progress in such a short time!!!! I have a few questions. lol
  • What was your fitness-level or activity starting point before? I'm assuming you were already in good shape with high endurance?
  • How much did your run on your first day?
  • Did you up the distance based on how you felt or did you have a goal set each run?
  • How has it transformed your body visually?

Wow, amazing! I can’t run long. Even before my endurance/stamina runs out, I always get bored and wonder when it’s going to be over.

- I was not completely out of shape when I first started running, however, prior to running, I was very inconsistent with working out - I would use weights and sometimes go on the elliptical/treadmill, but it was not very consistent. One week, I would exercise 3 times/week, and then another week it would be like one/week. I was never a long distance runner, so I'm shocked I could run this much, I did not think I had the endurance for it tbh,
- The first week of January and first day, I was not focusing on how many miles I was running. My focus was trying to run for 30 minutes without stopping regardless of how slow I was jogging. On the second week, that's when I was tracking miles, so I started off by running 2 miles.
- I mostly upped the distance based on how I felt. There are days where my body felt like I could run more, so I did.
- I have noticed some minor body improvements - the abdominal area is more toned and I noticed my arms are slightly bigger. I have lost a little weight, but not much. But It's only been 3 months, so it's really not a lot of change, and I am ok with that, because I am not in a rush.

20 miles all at once or 20 miles in total for the week?

I would say one tip is to run slow, at a conversational pace. The majority of your runs are suppose to be slow. It's not a race, and if other's pass you, that's ok. When I first started running, I was running on average, 13 minute/miles. Now, I am down to 11 minute/miles. Even though my best 1 mile time is 9 minutes, I am not going to run that on a 5 mile run (for instance), because my focus is running slow at a conversational, steady pace so I do not run out of gas by the time I finish.

I'm super impressed with your progress OP.
I've just recently picked up running for fitness/hobby too, it's been about a month and I'm feeling pretty great.
How do approach after-run care? Do you have any tips?

I know stretching before and after is super important and greatly impacts the quality of my runs. And I am prone to shin splints so I ice pretty often.

There's not much I do after running, usually I'll take a 15-20 walk as a cool down or I will ride my bike (very very easy riding) --- I ride because the wind feels very good on my face/body and cools me down
