I just started watching this weekend. I was going to do a thread and ask if there had bene any complaints about the chubby black friend being stereotyped as the sassy man hungry fat girl (ala Monique, Lonnie Love....)

Thats strange. As a fat person myself, i've always only seen the "fat friend" as the designated ugly friend every one "endearingly" makes fun of, who also is always self deprecating abt her weight and looks and always longing for male attention to prove shes beautiful even though she's fat and then ends up being the whipping boy.

The reason I asked you is because a lot of traditional AA names have African origins, like names ending in what youre saying. So you saying traditional AA names seemed redundant to me when many have outside origins (African, French, Biblical, etc). Makes sense given our background. I had to question considering one of your points was that the main character didnt have a traditional AA name and that was kinda silly to me. So because she doesnt have a “traditional” AA name she may not be AA? Hence what exactly is a traditional AA name because we stay given out children African inspired names.

Lets call a spade a spade.

It all boils down to the the "boujee" discussion.

She was basically saying that Insecure has a majority white audience, where a lot of foreign black people are essentially performing in "black (African American) face". And a lot of them are basically playing up old stereotypes of "African Americans" for a white gaze.
I liked the show but it's true. Do you really think Issa could do something like that in Senegal? ( I can tell you absolutely the fµck not. Same for Yvonne).

Serene did not tell one damn lie. Insecure had its cute moments, but I feel like the n word use was overkill. Also, arkward black girl was better and seemed like more of issa's personality.

I felt like they were over doing all of the strong xesual content and n word use to push the boundaries that HBO likes to push. Somethings felt tasteless and crass, but I feel like Issa might have been pressured to put those things in in order to appeal to the higher ups at HBO. It did feel like it wasn't all Issa or Issa's style with the overtness of it all. HBO must have a quote of how much explicitness they need per season or episode because other HBO shows seem to follow the same explicit formula.

I thought I was the only one. ABG was far better to me. Imagine that on the big screen.
